Life Is Consciousness
Isaac Pennington, the Quaker, said, “All truth is a shadow, but the last truth.” And the last truth is that life is consciousness. You are and you have and you do in accordance with your consciousness. That is the beginning and the end. There are other ways of looking at life that are superficially correct, but ultimately the truth is that your life is a state of consciousness.
Your so-called physical body is the embodiment of a part of your consciousness. Your home is the embodiment of another part of your consciousness. The kind of work you are doing —whether you are in work that you love, or whether you are doing drudgery that you hate—is the expression of your consciousness at that point. The kind of people you meet, the people you attract into your life, are the expression of your consciousness about your fellow men.
Emmet Fox (1886-1951) was born in Ireland, and was an important New Thought spiritual leader of the early 20th Century. He had a large influence on the founding of Alcoholics Anonymous. His writing, especially The Sermon on the Mount became popular in AA.
Fox taught that the foundation for all true productive expression was positive thinking. The technique involved having conscious awareness of our daily thought process and connectivity to God in order to realize any change or manifestation in the external environment. This concept was also taught by many mystics, including Rumi, Jesus, Buddha, Gandhi, and others from across all wisdom traditions.
