Powerful Meditation Anywhere, At Any Time, Under Any Circumstances
The practice of meditation is valuable preparation for effective Divine Science “treatment”, also known as affirmative prayer. Confirming to someone, “I will treat with you, for you.” opens up a new dynamic, which alerts the brain that it needs to pay attention. The neuroscientists have found that routine is uninteresting to the brain. Affirming that a new situation is at hand fires up the brain to expect and then to deliver.
This class is an overview of meditation and a sales pitch to encourage the practice of New Thought. Together we are going to consider the values and methods of this ancient art to contemporary life. This work also is an introductory platform designed to prepare the individual interested in taking charge of life’s “opportunities”. (New Thought practice does not dwell on the negative circumstances that life tosses our way, but upon the recognition of a “situation” from which we can learn more and more about the expression of Divine Mind is personal experience. Staying focused on “I am a thought expressed by The Mind of the Infinite” is a valuable affirmation to leap to in times of apparent trouble.)
In the handout materials, is a range of texts dealing with the practice of meditation from the scientific technical manuals to the time-honored Buddhist processes to the more contemporary “mindfulness techniques.”
Contemporary lifestyles for many of us leave limited opportunities to add a new “process” to our day, so we are going to build our meditation practice upon 20 minutes a day, every day until it is absolutely automatic; then we will change to a new approach of our own individual design.
Inviting one’s own soul, psyche, or Self (however, one individually references the Divine connection) to express obviously and actively in daily life is critically important, not only in difficult times but “every day and in every way.” That little pause to await the feeling—yea or nay or another idea altogether—over simple matters is crucial preparation for the Biggies. The 20 minute daily “communing” purposefully in meditation will reinforce one’s connection to the Divine, building confidence in the Lord. (The activity of the spiritual I AM as the ruling consciousness. The Lord God of the Scriptures (the Bible) is Christ, the Spiritual Woman/Man; our divine consciousness; the creative power within us. [p. 124, The Revealing Word, Charles Fillmore]
In past D.S. meditation classes, the idea of using simple accoutrements, such as candles, incense, flowers, a pillow, a lovely altar cloth were discouraged. However, in Don Brown’s book Human Universals, we are reminded that Homo sapiens are creatures of rite and ritual. Archaeologists have found rock art, burial items, and carved effigies that indicate human beings’ innate propensity for spiritual practices.
In the Fillmore text mentioned earlier, the definition of alter is a “stabilized place of worship. A fixed, definite center of consciousness where we meet the Lord . . .” The preparation and use of a special place, the lighting of the candle, the settling comfortably on the pillow, whatever acts of grounding one enacts alerts the heart and mind to the coming interaction, to Practicing the Presence. As one practices these preliminary steps that settle the meditator into a contemplative state gently, with specific intent, Truth is made manifest. With practice, deep, powerful meditation can take place anywhere at any time under any circumstances.
